Her Excellency the Secretary General of the Family Affairs Council, Dr. Maimouna Al Khalil, participated in a panel discussion on the role of the family in promoting social cohesion and human rights, organized by the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf Mission to the United Nations in Geneva, in partnership with the Permanent Mission of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the African Union Mission to the United Nations, on the sidelines of the 53rd session of the Human Rights Council.

Her Excellency the Secretary-General delivered a speech during the panel discussion, which centered on the importance of the family in promoting social cohesion, sustainable development and human rights. She emphasized the importance of supporting the family as a basic unit of society and the need to empower it and provide the necessary support for it to contribute to achieving sustainable development.

H.E. the Secretary General referred to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s experience in supporting the family at the local level and investing in preparing the future of future generations to achieve the goals of Saudi Vision 2030, which aims to enable Saudi families to thrive and grow in a safe and stimulating environment, to acquire a set of skills needed to manage obstacles, strengthen ties and improve human capital outcomes

In her speech, Her Excellency the Secretary-General cited Article 9 of the Saudi Basic Law of Governance, which emphasizes that “the family is the basic unit of Saudi society,” referring to the Kingdom’s interest in the role of the family and its importance in achieving sustainable development and preserving human rights. Her Excellency also explained the policies and programs recently adopted by the Kingdom regarding children’s affairs, women’s affairs and elderly affairs, which aim to preserve their rights and improve their quality of life, reflecting the Kingdom’s commitment to human values and the preservation of human dignity.

Her Excellency concluded her speech by stressing the importance of cooperation and coordination between countries and international organizations in supporting the family, preserving its unity, ensuring its stability, and enhancing its role in achieving social development through the adoption of the necessary legislation and policies, and exchanging experiences aimed at empowering and supporting the family.
